JEE (Main): Joint Entrance Examination

  • JEE (Main) is an All-India Level Engineering/Architecture Entrance Competitive Examination organized by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It was previously organized as All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE).
  • JEE main in 2022 will be conducted twice in April and May by National Testing Agency (NTA).
  • Students who qualify JEE Main examination will be eligible to get admissions into National Institutes of Technology (NITs) & Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITs)
  • To be eligible for undergraduate engineering courses from (Any of the NITs, IIITs, Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTI) or Institutions that are funded by participating State Governments) following points are considered:
    • The performance in class 12 or equivalent qualifying examination and
    • JEE (Main) Score
  • Another important point is to note that the Paper-1 (B.E./B. Tech.) of JEE(Main) is an Eligibility Test for the JEE (Advanced) examination. A candidate must appear for the JEE(Advanced) exam if the candidate is aspiring for admission to the undergraduate programs offered by the IITs.
  • No. of seats available through JEE (Main) is close to 32000, in different NITs, IIITs, IIEST and GFTIs

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age Limit- There is no age limit for the candidates who are appearing for JEE (Main) examination 2022. The candidates who have passed the class 12/equivalent examination in 2020, 2021, or appearing in 2022 irrespective can appear in JEE (Main) - 2022 examination. However, the candidates may be required to fulfill the age criteria of the Institute(s) in which they are desirous of taking admission.
  • Appearance year in Qualifying Examination: Candidates who have passed the Class 12/equivalent examination in 2020, 2021, or those who are appearing in Class 12/equivalent examination in 2022, are eligible to appear in JEE (Main) 2022. Candidates who passed the Class 12/equivalent examination in 2019 or before as well as those who will appear in such examination in 2023 or later are not eligible to appear in JEE (Main) - 2022.
  • Number of attempts- The no. of attempts for admission in a particular academic session will be considered as 'One’. Total number of attempts is limited to 3 for JEE (Main).
  • Eligibility for appearing in JEE Main exam allows a candidate to appear in the examination for three consecutive years (6 times over 3 years).
  • It is optional for the candidate to appear once or twice in any academic session.
  • If a candidate appears in both the tests (April and May) or any number of tests in one academic year then the better of the two/all scores will be used for the admission and, best of the scores would be taken for the merit list for the eligibility for JEE Advanced.
  • JEE (Main) – 2022 Session 1 - 21 April 2022 21, 24, 25, 29 April and 1, 4 May 2022
  • JEE Main – 2022 - Session 2: 24 to 29 May 2022

Marking Scheme

For One option correct question - 4 Marks to be awarded for every correct answer and 1 Mark to be deducted for every incorrect answer

For answer with a numeric value - 4 Marks will be awarded for every correct answer and 1 Mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer

  • Class 12 marks have no weightage in the preparation of JEE Main ranks. Students should know that the ranks will be determined based on their score in the entrance exam.
  • However, for admission into IITs, NITs, CFTIs the score that candidates have secured in their class 12 board exam will be considered. In this, candidates should have passed their exam with a minimum of 75 percent and for SC/ST it should be 65 percent. Students should further be in the top 20 percentile to be eligible for admissions.
